  7.     "One would wish the thing to come to an end," said
  8. novelist-in-hiding Salman Rushdie. In his first published
  9. interview nearly a year after Muslim death threats drove him
  10. underground, Rushdie told Britain's Guardian last week that he's
  11. now working on a book for "fairly grownup children." Once again
  12. he urged his critics to read The Satanic Verses, because they
  13. "would see that it is not unsympathetic to them." He wants it
  14. to appear in every edition possible, including the planned
  15. paperback version, even though he knows that would surely make
  16. the controversy flame anew.
